Project Overview

Tiling of an ensuite wet room floor and walls in a property in Spencers Wood, Berkshire. We were brought in to handle the tiling phase of a larger bathroom installation, preparing the space for the next stage of the fit-out.

Brief

The client needed a seamless wet room floor tiled in 60x60cm porcelain, with the fall correctly set to the drain position. The walls were to be finished in vertically laid metro tiles, including a tiled recess inside the shower area, with half-height tiling outside the shower zone. Brushed gold trims were specified for all exposed edges.

Approach

The most important part of this job was the wet room floor. Getting the fall right on a tiled wet room floor isn't something you can adjust afterwards —- it has to be planned and templated before a single tile goes down.

We started by assessing the drain position and working out the tile layout around it. With 60x60cm porcelain tiles, the cuts around the drain need to follow the gradient precisely so that water flows to the drain from all directions without pooling. This means every cut tile on the floor has to be individually measured, marked, and checked against the fall before it's fixed.

We used flexible adhesive throughout - essential for wet room floors where there's movement from underfloor heating or natural flex in the substrate. Flexible adhesive allows for minor expansion and contraction without cracking tiles or compromising the bond.

The walls were tiled in a vertical metro layout, which gives a more contemporary feel than the traditional horizontal brick bond. Inside the shower area, we tiled floor to ceiling including a recess for bottles and toiletries. Outside the shower zone, we half-tiled the walls - enough to protect the surface from splashing while keeping the upper wall clean for painting or other finishes.

All exposed tile edges were finished with brushed gold trims, giving a clean, defined edge that ties in with the client's brassware choices.

The tiling took two full days. We then came back the following day for grouting. We don't recommend grouting porcelain tiles on the same day as laying - the adhesive needs time to cure properly before grout is applied. Grouting too early risks disturbing the tile positions and can compromise the bond, particularly on a wet room floor where the fall is critical, as well as not allowing the moisture from the adhesive to escape through the joints.

Materials

  • 60x60cm porcelain floor tiles (seamless wet room floor)
  • Metro wall tiles laid vertically
  • Flexible tile adhesive
  • Flexible grout
  • Brushed gold edge trims

Result

A clean, accurately tiled wet room floor with the correct fall to drain, ready for the next phase of the bathroom installation. The vertical metro walls and brushed gold trims give the ensuite a contemporary, well-finished appearance. The recess inside the shower provides practical storage without interrupting the tile layout.
